Which hair extensions are right for you?
If you want longer and thicker hair, extensions are one of the most effective ways to achieve it without waiting years for natural growth. They can change the shape of your haircut, add volume where it is missing and give you styling options that are hard to achieve with natural hair alone.
Once you start looking into methods, it can get confusing quickly. Tape, nano beads, wefts, bonds and clip ins all work differently and suit different hair types and routines.
There is no single best extension method. The right option depends on your hair type, your lifestyle and how much maintenance you are happy to commit to.
Let’s break each method down to help you decide!
Tape extensions
How they are applied
Tape extensions come in small panels. Your stylist takes a thin section of your hair, places one tape underneath it and one on top, then presses them together. Your natural hair sits in between the two tapes. This creates a flat attachment that blends easily through the hair.
Best for: a natural blend and a flatter feel at the roots.
How long they last
Tape extensions usually need to be moved up every 6 to 8 weeks as your hair grows. At maintenance, the tapes are removed, cleaned, re taped and reapplied closer to the scalp. With good care, the same hair can often be reused.
Washing and daily care
Wait 48 hours before washing after application.
Wash around two to three times per week where possible.
Keep conditioner and oils away from the tape area and apply them mid lengths to ends only.
Always dry the tape area properly after washing.
Brush morning and night and always before washing. Hold the hair at the root while brushing to avoid pulling on the tapes.
Sleep with hair dry and loosely tied back.
Weft extensions
How they are applied
Weft extensions come as long strips of hair. Your stylist creates a secure base in your natural hair, then attaches the weft along that base in a row. The number of rows depends on how much volume and length you want. Placement is planned so the wefts are covered by your natural hair and sit comfortably against the head.
Best for: fuller volume, especially if your hair is already on the thicker side.
How long they last
Wefts are usually moved up every 6 to 8 weeks. During maintenance, the wefts are removed and repositioned closer to the scalp. Leaving them in too long can lead to tangling at the root and extra stress on your natural hair.
Washing and daily care
Rinse the scalp and row area thoroughly to prevent product build up.
Condition mainly through the mid lengths and ends.
Dry the row area properly after washing.
Brush in sections, starting from the ends and working up. Be gentle around the row area.
Tie hair into a loose plait or ponytail at night.
Nano bead extensions
How they are applied
Nano bead extensions are applied strand by strand. A small section of your hair and a strand of extension hair are threaded through a tiny bead. The bead is then clamped shut to hold them together. The beads are very small and sit close to the scalp, which helps them stay discreet when the hair moves.
Best for: a discreet option that still feels flexible.
How long they last
Nano beads usually need to be moved up every 6 to 8 weeks. At maintenance, each bead is opened and re clamped closer to the scalp. If left too long, they can become visible or uncomfortable.
Washing and daily care
Avoid heavy oils and scalp treatments near the beads.
Dry the bead area thoroughly after washing.
Brush gently and regularly to prevent tangling around the bead area.
Sleep with hair dry and tied back. If you swim or train often, you may need maintenance sooner.
Keratin bond extensions
How they are applied
Keratin bond extensions are individual strands with a keratin tip. Your stylist places the bond against a small section of your hair and uses heat to soften and mould the keratin around it. This seals the extension to your natural hair. Each strand moves on its own, which allows the hair to fall and blend naturally.
Best for: a longer wear option with lots of movement through the hair.
How long they last
Keratin bonds are usually worn for around 3 to 4 months. They are not moved up. They are removed and replaced with new bonds. Leaving them longer can increase tangling and make removal harder on your hair.
Washing and daily care
Keep conditioner and oils away from the bond area.
Dry bonds thoroughly after washing.
Do not place heat tools directly on the bond.
Brush daily to stop shed hairs building up near the bond. Section the hair when brushing and be gentle near the scalp.
Sleep with hair dry and loosely tied back.
Clip in extensions
How they are applied
Clip in extensions are attached by opening the clips and snapping them into your natural hair. They are placed in rows and covered by your top layers to blend.
Best for: events and weekends when you want a change without the long term commitment.
How long they last
Clip ins are designed for occasional wear rather than daily use. They should be washed only when needed, usually after ten to fifteen wears. Always remove them before sleeping and store them neatly to avoid tangling. They do not blend as seamlessly as salon methods and are best treated as a styling option rather than a long term solution.
So which method is best?
There isn’t one perfect method for everyone. It comes down to your hair, your routine and how much upkeep you are comfortable with.
The right option depends on:
Your hair thickness and condition
How much length or volume you want
How often you wash and style your hair
How much maintenance you are happy to commit to
Whether you want a short term or long term result
Finer hair wanting subtle volume may suit nano beads or tape. Thicker hair wanting fuller density may suit wefts or keratin bonds. Someone wanting flexibility without commitment may prefer clip ins.
